During the 2024 UN Security Council Open Debate Week, the Compact on Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action (WPS-HA Compact) – with the support of Compact Signatory, OP Global Events – hosted a reception to welcome new signatories and celebrate the launch of the 2024 Accountability Report. Over 100 participants attended the event, hosted in New York City on October 24.
Ms. Sima Bahous, the Executive Director of UN Women, gave a keynote speech where she highlighted the importance of the WPS-HA Compact and the work of its diverse set of signatories amidst the pushback against women’s rights.
The evening marked the launch of the WPS-HA Compact’s 2024 Accountability Report, which revealed both alarming trends and significant progress in advancing gender equality in conflict-affected regions. The report, which compiles data from over 44% of signatories, sheds light on the rising violence against women and girls, while also celebrating the collective efforts of signatories.
The event also included an exhibition showcasing the important work of signatories over the past year, including through impact stories featuring Global Affairs Canada, Search For Common Ground, Zanzibar Seaweed Cluster Initiative, and the Amani Initiative. The event was also an occasion to welcome the 25 new signatories who joined the WPS-HA Compact in 2024, including Geneva’s three security centers – Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance (DCAF), and Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) – as well as the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Romania’s Ministry of National Defense, civil society organization, AFIA MAMA Asbl and private sector signatory, Committed to Good.
