In October 2000, under the Presidency of the Republic of Namibia, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1325, a groundbreaking international commitment to recognising and promoting the role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations, peacebuilding, peacekeeping, humanitarian response, and post-conflict reconstruction.
Twenty-five years later, the international community reflects on the legacy and ongoing implementation of this landmark resolution, as well as best practices in advancing the Agenda into the next quarter century. As Chair of the Board of the Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action (WPS-HA) Compact, Namibia, in partnership with Compact Signatories, is convening this commemorative event to reaffirm the centrality of women’s leadership in peace and security, elevate the gains made, and harness collective action across regions and generations to advance the WPS agenda going forward.
